The Fifty Gayest Ads of All Time

Click here to view the website

Why is it still so shocking to see gay people in mainstream ads? At a time when every other demographic is practically shoehorned into marketing for the sake of diversity, gays and lesbians are still all but invisible in the TV advertising landscape. But while you might not have seen many yourself, gay-themed TV ads are definitely out there. To close out Gay Pride Month, we tracked down 50 of them from around the world and organized them into seven categories that seem to keep popping up ("Lesbians Are Hot," "Don't Tell Mom," etc.). Check out the collection after the jump.

THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB

QUIRKY FACTOR: An oddball mix of actors, some of whom (Timothy Olyphant, Zach Braff) are in this film before going on to much bigger things, and one who seems to be here on his first step out to pasture (Dean Cain, at least I guess until he's a regular on Housewives).

BEST SCENE: The very meta scene in the cafe where they Bitch that noone makes gay movies without people dying of AIDS or overemoting their lives. Very smart, very meta.

GAY DEATH: Yes, there is one but its poignant and sad and he's left with a lamenting partner a la "Four Weddings and a Funeral."

CRINGE FACTOR: Given that almost all of the actors are (apparently) straight, they all pretty much play it "straight" with the man-on-man kiss/hug portion. John Mahoney from "Frasier" is the worst drag queen on Earth, however; could he at least have removed his white grubby tank top before slapping on that dress? His singing performance, however, is perfectly cut to one line...

OVERALL: A friendly, quirky LA-scene comedy obviously pre-L Word with all its posturing and arty louche disposition. Nice romantic gestures, boy loses boy, boy gets boy back again, new boy comes out, older boy goes to Europe. Recommended.

RATING: *** out of 5
